When I first started growing vegetables, I focused almost entirely on the plants. I carefully selected tomato varieties, studied seed packets, and planned my garden layout down to the last row. What I didn't pay enough attention to was what was happening below ground.
It didn't take long to learn that healthy soil is the secret behind healthy plants.

The twisting motion works surprisingly well and is much easier on the back than repeated digging. The rotary cultivator is another great tool for quickly tilling the topsoil.

Step 5: Add Organic Matter
If there is one improvement that benefits nearly every vegetable garden, it's adding organic matter.
Compost helps:
- Improve soil structure
- Increase moisture retention
- Improve drainage
- Feed beneficial microbes
- Supply nutrients gradually
Spread two to four inches of finished compost across the garden surface and work it into the top several inches of soil.
Well-aged manure, leaf mold, and high-quality compost blends can also be excellent additions.

Heavy Clay Soil
Clay soil holds nutrients well but often drains poorly.
Adding organic matter year after year helps improve structure and drainage. Avoid adding sand, which can sometimes create a concrete-like texture when combined with clay.
Sandy Soil
Sandy soil drains quickly and struggles to retain nutrients.
Compost helps increase moisture retention while improving overall fertility.
Low Spots
Areas where water pools after rain may need additional drainage improvements or raised planting beds.
Taking time to identify and address these issues before planting can significantly improve growing conditions.
Step 7: Create Planting Rows and Beds

Once the soil has been improved, it's time to shape your growing space.
Organized beds and rows offer several advantages:
- Easier planting
- Better irrigation
- Improved weed management
- Simplified harvesting
